10 Kumi Jo: The Partner Practice Drills

The 10 Kumi Jo or kumijo (組杖) is the partnered practice using a Jo Staff. Kumi Jo is also spelled as kumijō (組杖).

Kumi Jo or kumijō (組杖) literally means partnered practice form of Aikijo.

There are two types that can be categorised as Kumi Jo. The 10 Kumi Jo and 31 Kumi Jo.

The Purpose of Kumi Jo

The purpose of the Kumi jo is for the Aikidoka to get a deeper understanding of movement, balance, awase, and timing whilst using a Jo staff.

There are subtle shapes and forms in the Kumi Jo that can be applied to taijutsu.

Saito Sensei originally taught only 7 Kumi Jo(s). He added another three Kumi Jo movements that are similar to the 7 ken tai jo movements.
